De toekomst van de volgende fases van het project \u2013 vooral de gelijkstroominfrastructuur \u2013 is onzeker. Na maanden van overleg tussen de CREG, netbeheerder Elia en de federale regering, lijkt er eindelijk een beslissing genomen te zijn. Premier Bart De Wever kondigde het nieuws aan tijdens een interview ter gelegenheid van zijn eerste 100 dagen in functie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volgens De Wever zal enkel de eerste fase van het project worden voltooid. Die is essentieel voor de aansluiting van de Belgische offshorewindparken en de interconnectie met het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De kosten zijn echter zo sterk gestegen dat de volgende fases voorlopig op de helling staan. De regering moet in de komende weken \u2013 vermoedelijk tegen eind mei \u2013 nog beslissen of de geplande gelijkstroominfrastructuur wordt uitgesteld of volledig geschrapt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Het oorspronkelijke budget voor het energie-eiland werd geraamd op 2,2 miljard euro. Intussen is dat bedrag opgelopen tot bijna 8 miljard euro, waarvan bijna de helft betrekking heeft op deze gelijkstroomverbinding infrastructuur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
